چکیده

Ice-retreat from the Cape Bathurst Polynya occurred in late May and early June 2004, and was quickly followed by a decrease in dissolved nutrient concentration at the sea surface. Concentration plots of NO3 versus PO4, and Si(OH)4 versus NO3 showed the ratios of nutrient uptake in the surface layer were in proportions expected for diatom growth (N:P 13.1:1; Si:N 1.8:1) and that water-column NO3 was depleted before PO4 and Si(OH)4. The temporal changes in integrated nitrate, phosphate and silicate concentrations were well described by logistic models that showed maximum consumption rates of 11.8, 0.82, and 17.8 mmol m−2 d−1, respectively, and a total seasonal draw-down of 210 ± 19 mmol NO3 m−2. If we include estimates of NO3 supply by advection, nitrification and freshwater dilution, then the amount of NO3 consumed could be 25−33% higher. Uptake of NO3 above the 1% isolume was balanced by an equivalent (94%) increase in particulate N over a 15 d period beginning at ice break-up. Thus, the amount of particulate spring new production associated with NO3 disappearance was estimated to be 16.1 ± 1.5 g C m−2.

Nutrient Dynamics and Decomposition rate of Norway Spruce Needles in Stråsan and Lajim stands

Climate changes due to changes in a habitat leads to differences in the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of leaflitters, which has many effects on the controlling factors of the decomposition process. In the present study, the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of Norway spruce was evaluated for 363 days in the two forestation sites in the natural and foreign habitats, ...

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the Homa Lagoon (İzmir Bay, Turkey)

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing were investigated at one station in the Homa Lagoon from February to January in 2006-2007. Our results showed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates and tintinnid ciliates and nauplii. Microzooplankton grazing increased with increasing of temperature. Grazing rate was ma...

Estimation of the thin ice thickness and heat flux for the Chukchi Sea Alaskan coast polynya from Special Sensor Microwave/Imager data, 1990–2001

[1] One of the largest Arctic polynyas occurs along the Alaskan coast of the Chukchi Sea between Cape Lisburne and Point Barrow. For this polynya, a new thin ice thickness algorithm is described that uses the ratio of the vertically and horizontally polarized Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) 37-GHz channels to retrieve the distribution of thicknesses and heat fluxes at a 25-km resolution...

Maize productivity and nutrient use efficiency in Western Kenya as affected by soil type and crop management

Low soil fertility and high weed infestation are the main culprits for the declining maize production inWestern Kenya. Technology packages to address these constraints exist, but their effectiveness is likely to be influenced by variability in soil types and farm management practices in the region. Trials were conducted during the 2008/2009 cropping seasons to investigate the nutrient use e...

Arctic foxes as ecosystem engineers: increased soil nutrients lead to increased plant productivity on fox dens

Top predators can provide fundamental ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, and their impact can be even greater in environments with low nutrients and productivity, such as Arctic tundra. We estimated the effects of Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) denning on soil nutrient dynamics and vegetation production near Churchill, Manitoba in June and August 2014. Soils from fox dens contained highe...
